About Us

Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge was founded over forty years ago by Steve and Audrey Baron who shared a dream and a desire to help those in their later years who needed care. Steve and Audrey personally managed a six person, renovated home called Stradford Nursing Home in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1958.

Managing the Stratford Nursing Home strengthened Steve and Audrey’s desire to serve seniors. In 1971, Steve and Audrey fulfilled their dream by building an intermediate, care facility with over one hundred bedrooms in picturesque Richmond, British Columbia. The day that Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge opened its doors was a very happy day for this hard-working couple and their family.

Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge was the very first care home in the community. For over 45 years, Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge upheld its legacy of being a leader in care and service, providing excellence in person-centered care, and making Fraserview a place to call home for residents and the community.

Now, as a continued legacy of our mission, vision, and values, we have the Baron Foundation -  a place to keep alive our beliefs in quality care and support for seniors in care, caregivers, and their families. *Please note that as of August 2015, Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge is under the KAIGO retirement home group.

About Our Founders

Donna Baron

As a former educator, Donna took her love of teaching into long-term care.  Working alongside her Mother, Audrey Baron she became the Administrator and co-owner of Fraserview Care Lodge.  Donna lead the Fraserview Leadership team through 3 Accreditations, of which the last one, exemplary (the highest) standing was awarded.  A massive step in creating a thriving culture, Donna believed in staff and family wellness programs and education.  Working with families one to one , she understood the emotional challenges families face with the admission process.  She pioneered and created a counseling program to assist families and their residents with the transition into care.

Coreena Robertson

“The manifestations of dementia arise out of unmet needs and unsuitable environments.” Rosemary Dunne, Adventures in Special Care

Coreena Robertson believes that we can do better for those in their later years with memory loss.  Immersed in dementia care as a teenager, helping out in the family business, and completing her Human Kinetics degree, Coreena developed an innate understanding of psychosocial programming and the barriers many put on those with memory challenges.

Shadowing her Grandmother, Audrey Baron who with her husband Steve built the first care home over 45 years ago in Richmond BC, as well as her Mother, Donna Baron, Coreena gained a genuine and organic understanding of person-centred care.

Achievements

Care Fair

April 2014

The first of its kind, the Care Fair was created for community connection, to bring the community to Fraserview, to connect and share knowledge on health and wellness. Hosting several health professionals including Dr. Gloria Gutman (SFU Gerontology), Dr. Carin Matsushita (Naturopathic Doctor), and Krista Frazee from the Alzheimer’s Society the Care Fair featured presentations and outdoor booths for the community and the resident seniors to attend.

Counselling Program

April 2015

Donna Baron knew that an admissions counseling program would help transition families to care. The adjustment can be traumatic, having to accept a diagnosis that your loved one needs to be in the care of and having to move them into a room while taking care of financial and family matters. We implemented 16 hours of counseling for each new resident and their family in 2012. The program was incredibly successful, bridging the gap between residents’ families and theonline staff as well as helping families have peace of mind.

Family & Resident BBQ

Life Inside

April 2015

We are proud to have shared a look inside our care home and an authentic and heartwarming reveal of those in care with Alzheimer’s and dementia. This video won the spotlight award. It is part of our mission to advocate and share that there is still so much life inside those who may not be able to recall the date or know your name… they are vibrant people who will thrive in positive and life-giving environments.
